Guillemette Ridet

visual artist & artist book designer

Biographie :

Biography :

Guillemette Ridet (15/07/1996) is a French visual artist and book designer, living and working in Brussels. After obtaining a DNA in Fine Arts at the ESADTPM (Toulon, fr), it was at the ENSAV La Cambre (Brussels, be) and more specifically in the Book Design workshop, from which she graduated in 2020, that she discovered and experimented with the potential of the book and its techniques as an artistic medium.
Since the end of 2023, she has been living in a studio in the Ateliers Mommen artists' residence.
At the same time, she is actively involved in the non-profit organisation Bureau des Affaires de l'Ombre. A militant collective made up of 7 artists and curators, it defines itself as a mutual aid group for visual artists and art students, which claims its principles as a philosophy: learning through mistakes, sharing knowledge, demystifying and de-dramatising.

Statement :

When I was a young child, my great-grandfather died, and I realised for the first time that what is present can disappear. Later, the death of a cousin of my own age taught me that what disappears is not entirely invisible; it leaves traces, latencies whose reality can emerge at any moment. Ever since then, I have been fascinated by both the inevitable disappearance of things and the possibility of their reminiscence ; I try to understand the mechanisms behind them and to grasp them.

I use fragments (found or created), parts of images and snippets of text, as construction figures that call for further deconstruction. Assembly, superimposition, repetition and alteration are both processes and results at work in this quest. Tirelessly covering, concealing, layering, yet leaving something to emerge. Opening up the possibility of a resurgence, creating the potential for an appearance and making room for a shift in meaning.

My artistic practice is most often expressed at the crossroads of editorial and sculptural forms. My relationship with the book (which I view as a rhizomatic, sensitive and adaptable structure, generating experiences, forms and narratives) influences the way in which I conceive and unfold my work in space. I envisage each of my works as part of a wider system; my current research is gradually taking shape within the practice of installation art.

My practice both stems from and influences a particular relationship with time and slowness. Experiencing temporality through the act of making, through manipulation or through wandering, brings into play a renewed attention to detail and to multiple interpretations.
